The Corruption of Tithe
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Tithe is a very important topic among the Christians, for both the religious leaders and the laity. There are some interesting things that I have noticed about it, and would like to share that with you.
It is normal for Christians to be taught about tithe on a routine basis as it is a major teaching of the Church. We know how christian leaders elaborate the topic with so many references from different parts of the Bible. And, they conclude that topic with warnings of terrible consequences (അനർത്ഥം) one may face with if refuse to give tithe.
When we go through the OT references we can understand that the particular topic can be divided into two:
- Bringing tithe in the presence of God
- Beneficiaries of the tithe
- The teachings are stuck at the first point. Every time we eagerly wait for a natural progression from the first point to the second, but it remains vain as usual. If someone dares to move to the second point, that person suspiciously stops with the share of Levites, who are regarded as the spiritual forefathers of present day christian leaders, especially the pastors who run churches.
- Tithe is taken for construction, land purchase and certain other wants of that sort.
Based on the OT narrative, the tithe should be brought in YHWH's presence and it shall be divided into various shares (4 groups are mentioned clearly): the Levite (the Levites didn't get any share of the land in Canaan to produce crops for their livelihood), the alien/sojourner (പരദേശി), the orphan (അനാഥൻ), the widow (വിധവ).Deu 26:12 "Every third year give the tithe---a tenth of your crops---to the Levites, the foreigners, the orphans, and the widows, so that in every community they will have all they need to eat. When you have done this,Deu 26:13 say to the LORD, 'None of the sacred tithe is left in my house; I have given it to the Levites, the foreigners, the orphans, and the widows, as you commanded me to do. I have not disobeyed or forgotten any of your commands concerning the tithe.Deu 26:14 I have not eaten any of it when I was mourning; I have not taken any of it out ....
For example, if the collection is 100 rupees, then the Levite may get 25 rupees; the alien may get 25 rupees; the orphan may get 25 rupees and the widow may get 25 rupees.
And after the tithe is shared among the needy, they would acknowledge it in their prayer by saying (Deut. 26: 13, "I have given it (the tithe) to the Levite, sojourner, orphan and widow according to all thy commandments...."
Let's read it again, COMMANDMENT!
LET'S MAKE SURE THAT OUR TITHES ARE SHARED AMONG THE NEEDY too, because It's the commandment of YHWH (if you think that the OT narrative is worth following).
Or else we can do as it's written in Mt. 19:21, Jesus said to him, "if you would be perfect, go, sell what you posses and give it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me."
The questions that raise are:
- How many Christian leaders are there who sacrifice their 75% of tithe for aliens, orphans and widows?
- What are the major teachings about tithe that the present day Christians are not taught/aware?
- What are the practical steps that we can take to make Christians understand about the real purpose/beneficiaries of tithe?
- Do we have more options other than the OT teachings about tithe and the NT teaching of giving away everything we have for the sake of poor for gaining treasures in heaven?
- What practical steps we can take regarding tithe to live a life truthful to the Word of God?
Does Jesus (or NT) really teach anything about tithe?
